HOW I KILLED THE MANDRAK

Trajce Katsarov

The action in the novel rests on the character traits of the two main characters Sakan and Rafal. The content is the result of their dominant character traits. They are diametrically opposite. For one, Sakan, if we say that he is sanguine, for the other, Rafal, we will surely say that he is choleric. If one of them, Rafal, builds his life career on the basis of a prototype (comic hero Mandrak), the other, sanguine in character, never sets before himself a person to emulate. Both characters perceive the world based on their passions. Both characters are righteous, in that one wants to fight for human rights through repressive measures, or through occultism, while the other, Sakan, is afraid of such a way of bringing justice to light. He solves problems by running away from them. The life line of both characters is tangential in anxiety. Both Sakan and Rafal succumb to the symptoms of the same disease. It helps the culminating point, recognition, to occur in choosing the beloved Nada. Both fall in love with Nada. They find a release from such agony in the duel. The duel can be characterized as a fight with the strangest weapons. As they both have a gift for painting which helps them to cure their anxiety, Rafal, who wants to embody the comic book hero Mandrak, a magician and occultist, challenges Sakan, who will succeed in marrying their mutual love Nada, to a cross-drawing duel of their portraits – Loved to draw Rafal's portrait and vice versa. The one who draws it first and faithfully wins. The vanquished dies, and the victor receives Nada as a trophy. Sakan objects to such a duel, but Rafal is adamant because he figures, as before, that anyone who draws him will die. Beloved, after feeling deathly fear, draws Rafal's portrait on a sheet of paper with a trembling hand. After that he falls into a deep sleep.
