"Stories" represents an important event not only in Gogol's literary development, but also in Russian literature.

The main feature of Gogol's short stories is that they describe the "little man". Before Gogol, the nobles were the main characters in Russian literature, and if the common people were mentioned at all, they were only servants and slaves, and that was their role in literary works as well. In doing so, Gogol expresses the suffering of the small man in the big city and protests against the heartless bureaucratic machine. In this way, the image of reality that Gogon gives with his short stories is more concrete and complete, and Gogol appears as a defender and representative of the lower strata, which further strengthens the humanistic feature in his works.

The publication is reading material for the fourth year of secondary education.
